ceiling fans + the eco home

Quartet of rotating blades
12 Days of a Camera Christmas Challenge

One of our resolutions for 2011 involved making our residence more "environmentally sustainable". When I looked back on our resolutions earlier this month, I noted that we'd acquired some ceiling fans, with an intention to share further details about them before month's end.

Well, it's still January, so I've managed to do it.

Our initial summer inhabiting the property proved extremely warm. I mean SCORCHING. We were fortunate to have evaporative cooling to help us stay comfortable, though it consumed considerable electricity to condition the entire house, when typically just Kym and I occupied a single room. Consequently, we spent many hours shifting our pair of portable fans between rooms. Following three summers living here, we eventually invested in ceiling fans. Here's what we've discovered since installation:
  • Ceiling fans manage cooling adequately without air-conditioning most of the time.
  • It's pleasant to have air circulation in a static house!
  • The air conditioner doesn't generate genuinely fresh air, whereas a couple of windows open and the ceiling fan operating quietly is WONDERFUL.
  • We run the fans considerably more often than anticipated.
  • We have relatively modest ceiling heights, and should refrain from waving our arms about whilst moving through the house.
Some considerations to keep in mind when contemplating ceiling fan installation:
  • Your air-conditioner usage will decrease. Since ceiling fans consume considerably less power than air-conditioners, you'll reduce electricity costs... substantially.
  • Reduced electricity consumption = reduced expenses.
  • Numerous organisations now advocate for fitting fans throughout homes to decrease reliance on air-conditioners. We've installed fans in two rooms and discovered that gentle air circulation in our main living spaces prevents the house feeling stuffy.
  • Ceiling fans maintain a room's humidity levels. Most air-conditioners either leave your eyes parched or make your hair oily!
  • Choose a fan suited to your requirements year-round. The fans we selected have a reversible switch, enhancing their performance during colder months. Indeed. Winter. Installing ceiling fans in winter ensures heated air from your heater circulates throughout the room, boosting its efficiency considerably. I'm keen to trial this with our wood heater this winter!
  • Ceiling fans don't consume floor area. It's straightforward to postpone purchasing one since, let's be honest, a portable fan from Bunnings costs far less. Yet when considering design and convenience, ceiling fans prove superior.
There's your answer, my ceiling fan appreciation piece.
