human rights meditations: an introduction

via my Flickr photostream

In countries where the majority possess more than they require or desire, human rights are frequently overlooked. The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights often appears irrelevant to us and seems directed at those in less developed nations. Nothing could be further from the truth. Countless individuals in Australia and other prosperous nations face human rights breaches (same-sex marriage is a prime illustration), and our everyday choices shape others' situations by either participating in human rights violations or, conversely, safeguarding them.

Over the next 30 weeks, I'll guide you through each right outlined in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. We'll exchange our perspectives and reflections throughout, exploring how these rights connect to our own lives.

This series aims not to be burdensome, but rather to encourage thought and dialogue. I hope you'll recognise how deeply human rights matter to your own circumstances and how you might adjust your behaviour to live with greater integrity and honour the rights we're all deserving of.

I'll share thoughts on individual rights in the Declaration each week, commencing tomorrow.

Feel free to employ this hashtag when you're tweeting about the series and your progress: #hrmlak
