Welcome to Week 6 of Human Rights Meditations. This week we're examining an Article from the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Find out more about the series here. This series invites you to spend time reflecting, and participate in the discussion via comments below & twitter (hash tag #hrmlak).
This week we're examining Article 6 of the UDHR.
Article 6: All people have the right to be recognised as a legal person in all jurisdictions.
Take time to review the article below carefully and allow it to resonate with you. As you contemplate, think about these points:
· What image immediately entered your head?
· What was your reaction to the material you encountered?
· Consider your perspective on yourself relative to those around you.
· Consider how you view the people and environment around you.
· Consider your awareness of worldwide concerns.
Jot down the piece and position it somewhere you'll notice it during the week. This will keep your mind engaged with the concept! Or, record something that's caught your attention whilst meditating.
Come on then, let's have a conversation! We should discuss our perspectives on each piece, what we're discovering about ourselves and the steps we're taking to align ourselves more closely with the Declaration. Remember, alongside commenting below, you can join the conversation on twitter using this hashtag: #hrmlak
This is what resonated with me:
This is what resonated with me:
- Citizenship: the conventional understanding relates to legal status—that is, being a citizen grants you voting rights. Yet contemporary interpretations focus on commitment to one's community. There's also a growing conversation about world citizenship and what it means to act ethically towards those connected to us through commerce and movement.
- Ethical consumption... yet again. I return to this repeatedly.
- Refugees: evidently, we don't afford refugees the same treatment as our own citizens. That's got to shift!
