Several weeks earlier a mate and I spotted a lovely antique piece sitting outside a neighbour's place. Once we'd obtained the neighbour's permission, we hauled it down the street and took it apart, taking off the upper set of drawers so she could work on it further. When she left with her prize, I was stuck with these three drawers:
Since they were destined for the bin, I thought I'd try giving them a second life in the yard. This is how I went about it:
Complement this with plenty of succulent cuttings and you're done!
I reckon eventually I'll give the containers a fresh coat of paint to make them look nicer, though for the moment I'm happy having my succulent cuttings safely housed. I'm looking forward to watching them mature enough to completely fill the containers!
Total Cost = $7
- Drawers = free
- Bricks & tiles to hold up the middle drawer = free (left by previous home owner)
- Weed mat = $2 (half a metre- we already had a 25m roll that worked out to about $4 per metre)
- Soil = $5 (half a 70 litre bag that was $10)
- Succulents = free (via friends)
- Leaf "mulch" = free (all over the garden!)
Time Spent = 2 hours (including tea breaks and consultation with Kym!)
