human rights meditations: week 4

Oh the Slavery
Oh the Slavery by My Dead Pony.
Get it on etsy.

Welcome to Week 4 of Human Rights Meditations. Every week we examine an Article from the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Find out more about the series here. The series focuses on moments you dedicate to reflection and participation in conversation through comments below & twitter (hash tag #hrmlak).

This week we're examining Article 4 of the UDHR:

Article 4: Slavery and servitude are forbidden; all forms of slavery and the slave trade must be eliminated.

Study the article below carefully and allow it to settle in your mind (this is quite extensive, so you may wish to divide it into sections as you contemplate). Whilst you contemplate, think about these points:
· What was your initial image or thought?
· What was your reaction to the content?
· Consider your self-perception relative to those around you.
· Think about your perspective on those in your community.
· Consider your views on international concerns.

Jot down your thoughts and position it where you'll encounter it regularly through the week. This encourages you to sustain your reflection! Or alternatively, note down something meaningful you've noticed during this practice.

Come on, let's have a conversation! Let's discuss our perspectives on each piece, what we're discovering about ourselves and the steps we're taking to align better with the Declaration. Remember, besides leaving comments below, you can also join the discussion on twitter using this hashtag: #hrmlak

Here's what's been on my mind:

  • The Story of Stuff video reveals what goes into making the things we purchase... it's rather disturbing!
  • Similarly, I was disturbed to learn how many slaves support my present lifestyle (and have begun taking action to address this)
  • Reducing your slave footprint is simpler than you'd expect. We shop for second hand and fair trade items whenever possible.
  • I'm shifting to fair trade undies to begin with.
  • I'm astonished that numerous nations have outlawed slavery within their borders yet endorse enterprises that rely on slavery abroad. How is that any different? (Answer: it isn't)
