quilting

I've been getting acquainted with my sewing machine and assembling a freehand quilt for the guest room ("freehand" being my polite way of saying "Let's just wing it. No need for detailed planning"). My approach so far has been
  1. Gather all the fabric remnants from around the house
  2. Press all the fabric remnants (regrettably this was an essential step...)
  3. Try to position the remnants in some kind of pleasing arrangement
  4. Discard the original design idea and begin stitching fabric together casually
  5. Stitch attractive (?) blue patterns across the material in a Picasso-esque style
That's my progress so far. The following step is to source a simple, thin fabric I'm happy with, which will serve as the foundation of the quilt (this will create one section, though not the full quilt).

My wiser self observes: "We shall discover, dear pupil, we shall discover."

What have you crafted from old fabric scraps?
