tea towel cushion tutorial

Recognise these?
True to my word, I'm back with a step-by-step guide. I've packed in loads of photos and can assure you that I'm a beginner at sewing and even with a couple of mishaps (stitching the wrong side "in") these cushions still only take around 15 minutes to complete.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

STEP 1: Lay your 2 tea towels flat against each other with the wrong sides facing. Fold the top tea towel back and across until the "rectangle" matches your preferred tea towel dimensions, then trim away the folded excess. Look at the two pictures below to understand what I mean.

STEP 2: Stitch a seam to "lock" the upper tea towel where you've just cut to prevent fraying. Then, stitch a seam across both tea towels at the upper end to bind them together. Refer to the image below.

STEP 3: At this point, you'll have two tea towels of varying lengths joined by a single seam along the top. Tuck the longer tea towel underneath the shorter one until they're equal in length. Make certain your fold runs inward between the two tea towels so your cushion operates correctly. Check the pictures below:

STEP 4: Pin the two tea towels together and stitch along both sides. Your tea towels should now be joined on three sides, with the side showing the "flap" from the larger tea towel left open. As shown in the picture below, the bottom stitch is simply to neaten that edge you cut earlier on the first tea towel.

If you're filling with a pre-made cushion insert, you're finished! Simply turn the fabric right side out and insert the cushion. If you're filling with stuffing that tends to shift around, keep reading... there's one final step to complete.

STEP 5: Attach press studs to your connecting "flappy end" of the longer tea towel (the section you folded over in Step 3) and the corresponding spots when turned right side out. I'm uncertain what press stud convention is but I used a hammer to tap them into place.

STEP 6: Add your preferred filling and snap the fasteners closed. DONE!

All set! I'd love to see how yours turn out. Feel free to share your creations on my facebook page, twitter, or drop a line to [email protected].

Enjoy your cushion making!
