Welcome to Week 5 of Human Rights Meditations. Each week we explore an Article in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Find out more about the series here. This series focuses far more on your reflection time, and participating in discussion in the comments below & on twitter (hash tag #hrmlak) than on any single perspective. Approach this with an open mind, and share your thoughts!

This week we're examining Article 5 of the UDHR.

Article 5: Torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment shall not be inflicted upon any person.

Study the article carefully several times and allow it to resonate. As you contemplate, think about these points:
· Which image immediately appeared in your thoughts?
· What was your reaction to the content?
· Consider your perception of yourself relative to those around you.
· Consider your views of the people in your environment.
· Consider your perspective on worldwide concerns.

Record your thoughts and place them somewhere visible during the week so you'll notice it regularly. This will encourage you to maintain your reflective practice! You could also jot down something memorable from this exercise.

Come on, let's chat! We should discuss our perspectives on each piece, what we're discovering about ourselves and the steps we're taking to align better with the Declaration. Remember you can also join the conversation on twitter using this hashtag: #hrmlak

Here are some thoughts that stood out for me:

  • Consumer ethics: My purchasing decisions and where I shop matter. Some straightforward shifts for me involve choosing where I source my tea, groceries and apparel. This article really highlights that if we're not shopping mindfully and ethically we bear responsibility to those who suffer from our purchasing choices. We're not simply tolerating it, we're funding it.
  • Gay Rights: I want to say clearly that I dislike the term "Gay Rights" when discussing LGBT community protections. Truthfully, these are human rights, and members of our own communities who face mistreatment and disdain because of their orientation deserve their human rights acknowledged. Let's move past disapproval. We should embrace genuine acceptance, rather than mere tolerance (which honestly, doesn't really accomplish much).
