Today marks International Women's Day. It is a day to honour the women who came before us and championed our freedoms. It is a day to recognise our accomplishments as women and a day to advocate for those still denied rights because of their gender.
Nanna Carla, you showed me that compassion is action. You emphasised the value of my education and encouraged me to value my chances. You demonstrated resilience to myself and my mother and never abandoned those you cared for. I cherish our scrabble matches.
Nanna Benji, you taught me that love is unconditional. You are always the first to step forward and get things done and you do it willingly. You have shown me that deeds matter more than words.
Nanna Bus, I miss you. you taught me about conviction. Conviction in God, conviction in people and conviction in myself. You lived a life that demonstrated how a journey is shared with others. You taught me to voice my opinions and stand independently.
Mum, you taught me that strength requires vulnerability too. You showed me that life isn't always straightforward and that understanding others through empathy is what bridges the gaps. You and Dad showed me that a woman can be the breadwinner and that different roles didn't diminish your femininity or Dad's masculinity.
I am continually inspired by the remarkable women in my life. These are women who take their roles seriously. They are women who advocate for equality, women who support their communities and women who forge their own futures. They are women who care, who share, who develop.
I am the most fortunate girl in the world.
