I woke up feeling rather out of sorts today, without any particular reason. Simply grumpy from the moment I opened my eyes.
And now I'm sitting here wondering what on earth—feeling so irritable—I could possibly contribute to The Happiness Files. I might mention how much I'm enjoying my current role, or that my finances are in order. I could highlight the incredible, driven women in my life who simultaneously inspire me and keep me anchored. I could reflect on all the people I love being well and content. These are genuinely things I'm thrilled about, yet somehow I'm still in a foul mood.
So what shall I add to the happiness files today? What might help shift this difficult mood?
Breathing. When I'm in this state, I've found that focusing on my breathing is all I can manage. In. Out. The truth is, at this moment breathing is genuinely all I need to do. I don't need to pursue something enjoyable to drum up enthusiasm. I don't need to ring someone up. What I actually need is to stop my mind whirring and simply breathe.

Much improved.
Today I'm adding breathing to The Happiness Files, because it reminds me that you don't always require a solution or significant gesture to feel better. Contentment and rough days can exist side by side. 'Breathing' keeps me present and reminds me I can stop doing and simply exist.
If you're feeling a bit disconnected or like you don't quite fit in your own skin, give breathing a go. It works for me.
